Credit: This course has been approved for 3 credit hours of continuing education for New Mexico psychologists.
The New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board and the New Mexico Social Work Board currently accept continuing education credits that are approved for New Mexico psychologists. These courses have not been approved for use in other states.

Summary: Psychologists continue to have limited education in supervision despite the reality that most supervise psychology trainees as well as multiple master’s level mental health and behavioral health clinicians. In New Mexico, there are currently no specific competency requirements for supervision by psychologists while other New Mexico licensing boards require specific supervision course preparation, including for psychologists who seek to become approved interdisciplinary supervisions for non-independently licensed social workers predominant to rural and underserved areas. The New Mexico public behavioral health system serves the majority of New Mexico residents with NM Human Services Department Behavioral Health Services Division supporting high quality mental and behavioral health practice and supervision.

In 2018, a clinical supervision implementation guide was produced by an interdisciplinary mental health work force with expertise in supervisory practices across New Mexico to offer best practice guidelines and practical implementation strategies. This course offers that guide as a relevant introductory level overview of New Mexico public behavioral health policies, clinical supervision experience, clinical supervision preparation models, methods, and resources to assist psychologists in obtaining additional competence in supervisory practices consistent with postdoctoral CE education.

Objectives:

(1) List two relevant New Mexico public behavioral health policies for supervisory practice
(2) Describe 2-3 supervisory implementation strategies to enhance supervisory practice
(3) Identify 1-2 theoretical models of clinical supervision
(4) List 1-2 clinical supervision evaluation methods
